Harry Kane Wins 2026 Ballon d’Or After Record Season

Harry Kane Ballon d’Or 2026 is now a reality. The England captain and Bayern Munich striker was named the winner of the 70th Ballon d’Or on Monday, October 26, earning the France Football prize given to the best individual player in world soccer.

It is a first Ballon d’Or for a player who has been considered among the world’s best for several years, and the first won by an Englishman since Michael Owen in 2001. Kane beat France star Kylian Mbappe and Spain star Lamine Yamal to the prize, in a ceremony held at the London Palladium.

“Wow, wow, wow,” Kane said when he took the stage, to cheers of “Harry, Harry” from a home crowd. “It being here in London as well has made it extra special,” he added. “Thank you very much. Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I can imagine it was really tough this year — some incredible players I was up against.”

A record season by the numbers

Kane’s case for the award rested on extraordinary goalscoring numbers. He scored 73 goals in 65 competitive matches for club and country in the period considered eligible for the award, from August 3, 2025 to July 19, 2026, according to USA Today.

  • 36 goals in 31 Bundesliga matches, helping Bayern Munich win the 2025-26 German league title.
  • 14 goals in 13 UEFA Champions League matches, including goals in both legs of the quarter-finals against Real Madrid and both legs of the semi-finals against Paris Saint-Germain.
  • Six goals for England at the 2026 World Cup, where he also added an assist.
  • 61 goals in 51 games for Bayern across all competitions in 2025-26, according to other season tallies, as Bayern completed a domestic league and cup double.

He also won the European Golden Shoe last season for the most goals across Europe, his second time winning that award after his first Bayern season in 2023-24. The Times reported that his 73 goals put him second in the modern era behind only Lionel Messi, who scored 82 in 69 matches in 2011-12.

From Tottenham nearly-man to Bayern winner

Kane rose to prominence at Tottenham Hotspur, where he played more than 300 matches between 2009 and 2023 but left without lifting a major trophy. His move to Bayern Munich in 2023 changed that story: he now has a pair of Bundesliga titles, the DFB-Pokal, and, as of Monday, the sport’s top individual award.

The ceremony took place in London, his hometown and the city where his career began — a fitting setting for a player whose journey has been defined by persistence. He was released by Arsenal’s academy at the age of eight, scored his first professional goal in England’s third tier, and built himself into one of the most complete strikers of his generation through work as much as talent.

While his scoring would have been enough to win the prize most years, the 33-year-old has also become more than a traditional forward, sometimes dropping deep into a playmaking role for both club and country and contributing to the team’s defensive effort, USA Today noted.

Putellas wins women’s Ballon d’Or for a third time

Spain midfielder Alexia Putellas won the women’s Ballon d’Or for the third time, after previous wins in 2021 and 2022. The 32-year-old captained Barcelona Femeni to a quadruple of trophies — the league title, two domestic cups and the Women’s Champions League — before signing for the London City Lionesses in England this summer.

“I don’t know what to say, too many things. Congrats to all the nominees, congrats to all the winners,” Putellas said in her acceptance speech. “That so many Barca players were nominated says a lot about the season we had. It was my honor to be your captain.”

Other awards on the night included the Kopa Trophy for the best player under 21, won by Lamine Yamal, the Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper, won by Unai Simon, and the Gerd Muller Trophy for top scorer, won by Kane.

How the Ballon d’Or is decided

The Ballon d’Or is voted on by a panel of journalists from each of the top 100 countries in the FIFA rankings. Voters weigh individual performances, trophies won, and decisive moments across the season. After Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo won all but two of the awards between 2008 and 2023, the prize has entered a less predictable era, with the winner far less certain from year to year.

Kane’s previous best finishes underlined how long he had waited: he finished 11th last year, when Ousmane Dembele was crowned, 10th in 2024, when Rodri won, 19th in 2023, when Messi won his eighth, and 21st in 2022, when Karim Benzema took home the trophy.

What the win means for Kane’s legacy

Kane is the fifth English player to win the Ballon d’Or, following Stanley Matthews, the inaugural winner in 1956, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan — who won it twice — and Owen. The ceremony paid tribute to Keegan, who died in July, adding poignancy to a night that also marked the 70th anniversary of Matthews’ first win.

He also passed Pele on the all-time World Cup scorers list during the summer tournament and became England’s all-time scorer at the competition, adding to a record that already includes the Golden Boot he won at the 2018 World Cup for most goals in that tournament.

For Kane, the Ballon d’Or completes a transformation that once seemed unlikely: from a player criticised for lacking trophies to one of the most decorated strikers in world football. As he told the London crowd on Monday night, determination and hard work, he said, “can really achieve” — a message that resonated far beyond the Palladium.
